This year marks a milestone for W&S Plastics Malaysia: ten years since the company first opened its manufacturing operation in Kulai, Johor, in 2016. A decade on, its manufacturing footprint has more than doubled, its team has grown and it now supports customers across a diverse range of industries. But a decade of growth is only half the story. The other half belongs to the people who built it, and the community they have grown alongside.
Growing capability
Over the past decade, W&S Plastics Malaysia has expanded both in scale and capability. The opening of a second facility in 2023 supported this growth, with the Malaysian operation now running injection moulding machines ranging from 50 to 450 tonnes, alongside expanded ISO Class 7 and Class 8 cleanroom facilities.
This increased capacity has enabled the Malaysian team to support projects across the medical, electrical and semiconductor sectors, as well as specialised technical applications. Its capabilities have also extended beyond injection moulding and customised secondary processes to support customers in developing custom automation solutions and equipment.
Growth has been accompanied by continued investment in the manufacturing environment, including modern equipment, increased automation and improved production monitoring and process controls. Together, these developments have strengthened quality, consistency and productivity, while workplace safety systems have continued to evolve.
Health and safety a priority
W&S Plastics Malaysia was one of only 15 companies in Malaysia to receive recognition from the Department of Occupational Safety and Health in January 2021 for its occupational health and safety practices.
Rather than treating the recognition as an end point, the team has continued to develop its approach to workplace safety through risk assessments, employee training, machine and equipment controls, housekeeping standards and greater emphasis on hazard identification and reporting.
Part of the local community
As the operation has grown over the past decade, so too has its relationship with the surrounding community.
In 2025, twenty team members traded the production floor for a hiking trail. The whole team spent the day climbing Gunung Pulai together, stopping along the route to collect rubbish from the trail and surrounding areas. By the end, they had covered the distance, left the area a little cleaner, and spent the day strengthening their teamwork and friendships.
It’s the kind of day that sums up how the team think about community engagement. For W&S Plastics Malaysia, this is not simply about making financial contributions. Employees take part because they enjoy giving back and working together towards something positive, and the team looks for opportunities to contribute their own time, energy and effort, working together outside their normal roles.
This combination of community contribution, environmental responsibility and team building has become a recurring theme in the Malaysian operation’s activities, creating experiences that are as meaningful for the team as they are for the community it supports.
Over the years, employees have supported elderly residents and children with disabilities through a Malaysia Day program, and shown up for the community when it mattered most, providing Iftar meals to frontline healthcare workers at Hospital Sultan Ismail during the COVID-19 pandemic, in recognition of their dedication through some of its hardest months.
Environmental initiatives have also been a strong focus, with the team taking part in mangrove replanting and clean-up activities at Tanjung Piai Johor National Park to help protect the local mangrove ecosystem.
That commitment is continuing in 2026, with further environmental activities planned, including an e-waste collection and responsible disposal initiative in line with ISO 14001:2015 and another mangrove replanting activity in the Pontian National Park.
The response from the community has been positive, and for W&S Plastics Malaysia, the value goes beyond any single activity or contribution. Each initiative helps build stronger relationships with the local community, creates greater environmental awareness and encourages employees to give back, while strengthening teamwork and engagement across the team. Most importantly, as the team describes it, these activities keep building a stronger connection between W&S Plastics Malaysia and the community it calls home.
Investing locally
W&S Plastics Malaysia provides local employment and training opportunities, works with local suppliers and service providers where practical and builds relationships with businesses and training partners in the surrounding area.
Its university internship program provides students with practical workplace experience and exposure to advanced manufacturing, helping develop local skills and introduce emerging talent to the industry.
These relationships are particularly important in Kulai and the wider Johor region, where the growth of manufacturing brings opportunities not only for individual businesses, but also for employees, suppliers, students and the broader local economy.
As W&S Plastics Malaysia enters its second decade, those foundations, in manufacturing capability and in community connection, will continue to shape its growth.
